An oceanic process whereby cold, nutrient-rich water is brought to the surface as a result of winds moving surface waters offshore, away from continental shelves, or seabed currents interacting with land masses. Typically results in increased productivity of fisheries where it occurs, as a result of the increased nutrients being brought into sunlit surface waters.
